Are you graduating soon or a recent graduate? Are you stressing about what to do once school is over? Well, you are in the same boat as almost every new graduate. Transitioning to the professional world can be difficult, and many students may experience anxiety about the uncertainty of no longer having a strict course schedule come September.

Studies have shown that ⅓ of recent graduates suffer from anxiety. There has been an upwards trend since 2005, and anxiety in students increased exponentially after the Covid-19 pandemic. Many recent graduates are unsure of their career path, experience job insecurity, or have difficulty balancing life and work; it is no wonder that anxiety in post-graduates is six times that of the general population. However, there are ways to combat the stress associated with moving on from university life, and this article discusses effective strategies for managing post-graduation anxiety and navigating this transformative time. This article explores the importance of setting realistic goals, embracing uncertainty, and seeking support.

The first thing to remember is to embrace the uncertainty. Take this time to focus on personal and professional development. This time in your life is meant for exploration and growth, so do not be afraid to change the plan to gain new insights and experiences. Additionally, give yourself grace. Graduating from university is a major accomplishment, and it is ok to take some time to plan out your next move.

Creating a reliable and attainable plan is the best way to curve anxiety about the future. Identifying goals and planning how to achieve them can help ensure you are prepared, keep you motivated, and allow you to have control over your future. The first step in planning your career path is to consider your ultimate goals in life. Imagine how you want your future and research how others got there. Take some time and assess your strengths and interests and research careers in your desired field. Consider your personal and professional goals and set both achievable short-term and long-term goals. A reliable way to create attainable goals is to ensure they are SMART. Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based.

I always suggest that students talk to their academic advisor if they have any uncertainties about their university career and beyond. If you have yet to graduate, the Advising Centre can help to review resources available for Career Services, discuss post-graduation options, and prepare you for graduation. Additionally, the Sobey School of Business offers Graduate Student Career Services designed to support students in securing meaningful careers.

In addition to focusing on the future, create time to take care of your present self. Without the strict course schedule at university, it is essential to stay active and social. The best way to take care of yourself is to establish a daily routine of healthy habits. Incorporating exercise, hobbies, and relaxation techniques into everyday life can significantly reduce anxiety. Also, stay connected to your university friends even if they have all dispersed after receiving their diplomas. The social support friends provide is unmatched and can help to bring back a sense of belonging that has been lacking since graduation. Lastly, Saint Mary's University has fed our brains valuable knowledge for the past four years, and it may seem strange to suddenly stop the constant inflow of new information. Therefore, consider keeping up with emerging articles and recent advances in your field of interest to continue feeding your brain and stimulating information.

In life, it is essential to acknowledge that everyone has a unique path to follow. Comparing oneself to others or feeling pressured to conform to societal norms can lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety. Embracing the idea that each person's path is different allows us to focus on our growth, development, and fulfillment. Additionally, lifetime goals are not achieved overnight; rather, they are comprised of smaller, achievable goals. Do not stress if things do not go according to your plan because an open mind allows you to grow, learn, and thrive despite the challenges you encounter.

Managing post-graduation anxiety requires a combination of self-reflection, determination, and a positive mindset. Remember, this is a transitional phase where uncertainties are natural. Embrace the journey, set realistic goals, and seek support from friends, family, and academic advisors. Continue building your skills and network while practicing self-compassion and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. With determination, you can overcome post-graduation anxiety and confidently take on the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.
