Everyone has been, or will be, at a point in their lives where they are in need of employment. Recent graduates looking to enter the workforce but are unsure of where to begin, current students who are looking for a part-time job to make some extra cash, or even students just looking for an exciting summer job are all in need of guidance with searching for employment. Fortunately, this struggle can feel a little easier with SMU’s Career360 service. Career360 is a fantastic service that allows students to not only aim for the stars, but to actually reach them. Career360 is a service that is run through Saint Mary’s University which provides students with access to employment, volunteer, and experiential learning opportunities both within and outside the Saint Mary’s community. This website offers students access to a wide range of career-related resources and support that can help students find and secure a job, as well as stand out to employers amidst other applicants.
One of the main functions of Career360 is to provide a catalogue of job postings that are available all over the world, but primarily those in Canada. Their catalogue allows students to filter their search by in-person, remote, full time, or part time positions so that students are able to find a job that is best suited to their personal preference. What makes Career360 so great is the wide range of unique employment opportunities that are posted. By looking through the catalogue, students may come across a job that they may not have previously thought about for themselves. For example, at the time that this article was written, Career360 had interesting and intriguing jobs such as a crypto-scientist, dairy goat hearder, early childhood development coordinators in Tanzania, and human trafficking navigator with the Government of Nova Scotia. Notably, Career360 is available for SMU graduates up to three years after their graduation date. Because of this, students can still utilize this service to secure a job even after they have left our university. The job catalogue on Career360 is a perfect place for recent graduates to find employment, but also for current students to find part-time or summer jobs.
Additionally, many on-campus employment opportunities at SMU are posted on Career360 and require students to apply through the website. Because of this, creating an account on Career360 and checking their job postings fairly regularly can be helpful for students to find and secure on-campus volunteer and employment opportunities. On-campus employment opportunities can be perfect for most students being that they are flexible to your class schedule and exam periods, and many students are used to commuting to campus. At the time of writing, a few of the on campus jobs that were available on Career360 include student ambassadors, resident assistants, history research assistants, and student callers. For students who are interested in working on campus, Career360 is the best place to start looking.
Notably, Career360 is not only a great place to apply for jobs, but also to keep track of the jobs you have already applied to. Career360 allows students to review their applications after they have already been submitted to employers and be notified when the employer requests an interview. This enables students to be aware of whether or not the employer has made their decisions yet so that they do not have to wait longer than necessary. Also, on this website, students are able to store their resume and cover letter so that it can be reused for other jobs that may come up with a simple click of a button.
In addition, co-curricular records can be created on Career360. Co-curricular records act as a verified record for what a student has done outside of the classroom while in university. Whether that be participating in societies, receiving academic awards, or even attending a conference, all of these experiences should be included in a student’s co-curricular record. Unfortunately, many students are unaware of what a co-curricular record is and how much importance it can hold. Because of this, students often finish their entire undergraduate degree without creating their own co-curricular record, and by that time it may be difficult to create one because they are unable to remember everything they took part in outside of the classroom.
Lastly, Career360 also offers support through interactive workshops and events that students can attend in order to help advance their career. With at least one workshop taking place every day, students are bound to find one that can be useful or interesting to them. Almost every weekday, Career360 hosts an online Job Search and Resume Support webinar where they guide students in how to successfully search for employment and how to create a professional and memorable resume. Other events that Career360 hosts include employer networking and recruitment events, round table business discussions, co-op information webinars, and general career Q&A sessions. By taking part in the events and workshops that are offered through Career360, students are introduced to people who offer a safe space to discuss their career questions or concerns. Students can check out Career360’s upcoming events on the Events and Workshops Calendar that can be found on their website.
There are many more services that were not mentioned that are equally important for students to check out. SMU students are encouraged to refer to Career360 for help with anything and everything career related, and they can access Career360 through their website by signing in with their S number and password.
