The Saint Mary’s University Student Association (SMUSA) held its Election Party on the 13th of February, 2020, at 7:00 pm. Students gathered in the Gorsebrook Lounge with friends to enjoy food, music and drinks and to hear this year’s announcements. After about thirty minutes, the speaker of the night declared the results.

At the annual Election Party, the President for the upcoming term was announced along with four new members of the Board of Directors. The winner of the Presidential debate and SMUSA’s new President for 2020-2021 is Bryn de Chastelain. The four new members appointed to the Board of Directors are Pearl Buyanzi, Abhinav Guar, Joshua Sydney and Brian Tumusiime.

After the announcements, students and some of this year’s winners continued to mix and mingle while enjoying music from Pirate Jenny, the live band that played at the time.

While there, I had the opportunity to interview some of this year’s winners who shared with me what they are most excited about for this upcoming term. Bryn de Chastelain is most passionate about “keeping the conversation going [between SMUSA and the student body],” improving communication and filling the gap wherever he can. Bryn will begin his Presidency on the 1st of May, 2020.

Pearl Buyanzi wants to “put into action all the ideas [she] talked about during [her] campaign, to work [along] with the other Board members and to strengthen the relationship between SMUSA and SMUdents.”

Abhinav Guar is looking forward to “work[ing] together to [ensure] policies are implemented and create policies that will help [the] students and the association.”

Joshua Sydney is excited to “work with the team and contribute to [what the Board has] planned for the next academic year.”

Brian Tumusiime is “most excited about [contributing to] a team that will determine the future of SMUSA.”

This year’s elected members of the Board of Directors will officially begin their term in September 2020.
