The Dockside Dining Hall at Saint Mary’s University (SMU) is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s where students gather, friendships are forged, and culinary adventures begin. With its bustling atmosphere, diverse food options, and commitment to inclusivity, Dockside has become an integral part of campus life. However, as with any great tale, there are a few twists along the way. Let’s take a dive into the world of Dockside, exploring its delights, hygienic challenges and exciting future.

Getting Started: Meal Plans and Costs

Navigating meal plans at Saint Mary’s University can be a bit like planning your weekly grocery shopping spree, but with a little more structure. For the 2023-2024 academic year, the cost of meal plans varied based on the number of meals and flex dollars chosen. Flex Dollars at Saint Mary's University are part of the meal plans, with students receiving $262.50 each semester. They can be used at Starbucks, Tims, Dockside, Gorsebrook, or any other food outlet on campus.  The 7-Day All Access Meal Plan costs approximately $3,238 per semester for both international and Canadian students.

While there is no distinction in meal plan costs based on student residency status,  the meal plan is mandatory for students living in Vanier Residence and Loyola (South or North). However, students residing in Rice Residence are only required to have a minimum flex dollar plan ($262.50) per semester since their rooms are equipped with kitchens. For those not on a meal plan but still craving the Dockside experience, individual meals are available for purchase. A single entry to Dockside Dining Hall costs around $12.50 for breakfast, $16 for lunch, and $18.50 for dinner. You can find more details and sign up for a meal plan on the SMU Meal Plan website.

The Good: A Gastronomic Wonderland

The Dockside cafeteria is like a culinary theme park. From hearty breakfasts to delicious dinners, the menu is a smorgasbord of options catering to all tastes. Craving comfort food? You’ll find it. Want something healthy and green? There’s a salad bar for that. Need a vegan, vegetarian, or gluten-free option? Dockside has you covered.

Dockside has a variety of good quality food. Dockside Dining Hall is the epicenter of culinary delights at SMU, operating from 7:30 AM to 8:00 PM on weekdays, and from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM on weekends. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, Dockside has got you covered. Imagine waking up to the smell of freshly baked pastries, featuring breakfast classics like scrambled eggs and bacon, while lunch and dinner offer a rotating menu of international cuisines, fresh salads, and hearty soups. The seasonal menus keep things interesting, offering new dishes that reflect the time of the year. Think pumpkin-spiced everything in the fall and hot chocolate in the winter. It’s a foodie’s dream come true!

The Not-So-Great: A Few Bumps on the Road

But let’s keep it real, Dockside isn’t always perfect. While some meals are culinary masterpieces, others can be, well, a bit of a letdown. It’s like expecting a five-star meal and sometimes getting a three-star experience. Consistency is key and this is an area Dockside could improve. Then there’s the not-so-appetizing rumor mill. Though there is not much evidence of unwelcome guests of the rodent variety other than “hear- say”, no one wants to share their meal with a rat, and such issues understandably raise concerns. The university is tackling these problems head-on with stricter health and safety protocols, but it’s a reminder that maintaining a large dining facility is no small feat. Rats are common in Halifax due to its urban environment, which provides food sources and shelter, and the city's climate, which supports their survival. Hence, this situation is not a unique one for Saint Mary’s University.

For those with specific dietary needs or health concerns, SMU provides access to dieticians who can help tailor meal plans to meet individual needs. You can find more information about dietary services on the SMU Dietician website.

The Silver Lining: Improvements and Innovations

The good news? Saint Mary’s University is not just sitting back. The university is doubling down on hygiene. Regular inspections and pest control measures are now the norm, ensuring that Dockside remains a clean and safe environment. It's a proactive approach that shows the university's commitment to student welfare.

Catering to International Students: A World of Flavors

Serving a diverse student body, Dockside is more than just a Canadian culinary haven. It's a melting pot of global flavors. But how can Dockside better cater to its international students? Here are a few spicy suggestions:

  1. Authentic International Cuisines: How about a rotating menu that features authentic dishes from around the world? One week could be dedicated to the rich flavors of Indian cuisine, and the next to the vibrant tastes of Mexican food such as quesadillas and tamales. It could provide students with a culinary tour without leaving campus.

  2. Themed Food Nights: Turn dinner into a cultural celebration. Imagine a night of Italian pasta, complete with opera music and checkered tablecloths. Or a Japanese sushi night, with origami decorations and traditional music. It’s fun, educational, and delicious.

  3. Cultural Events: Combine meals with cultural activities. Host events where students can share their traditions, music, and even cooking tips. It’s a great way to foster a sense of community and appreciation for diverse cultures.

Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future

The future of Dockside at Saint Mary’s University looks bright, with ongoing renovations, a focus on hygiene, and a commitment to inclusivity. While Dockside has its challenges, the efforts to improve and innovate are clear. By enhancing food quality, maintaining high standards of hygiene, and celebrating diverse culinary traditions, Dockside is on its way to becoming a dining hall that truly caters to the entire university community. With a sprinkle of creativity and a dash of effort, Dockside can transform into the heartbeat of campus life, where every meal is a delightful experience.
