Everyone knows that music is one of the best ways to relax and recharge. Whatever type you may be into, plugging in those headphones after a long day is a wonderful way to unwind. It makes objectively repetitive tasks like cleaning or studying more fun- who doesn’t love a good background soundtrack? And, with every different genre under the sun being easily available both online and otherwise, there truly is something for everyone. If you’d like to learn how to incorporate this beautiful hobby into your routine, look no further! Additionally, Halifax is home to a multitude of talent. The bar scene is always alive and filled with local talent, and the family-friendly celebrations (like natal day, just gone by) are always a musical hotspot. There are endless choices of interesting places to go if you’re looking for a night of musical fun. Below is a breakdown of just a few of these fantastic festivals happening this summer; who knows, maybe I’ll see you there!
Wake Up With Some Tunes!
One small way you can slip some music into your day is to try making it your alarm tone! Instead of the infernal beeping that many are accustomed to, a favourite song can prove a much more welcome wake-up call. If you worry that you may just grow to hate this, like any other alarm sound, you could try turning on the radio quietly while making breakfast and getting ready for the day! Incorporating song into your morning routine is a great way to get your day started on a positive note.
Use Instrumentals to Help Focus
For me, I find listening to instrumental music helps me focus. If I’m writing notes, reading dense and long textbooks, or even just reading for fun, I will always have something playing in the background (here is one of my favourites!). This tends to keep the mind occupied and helps avoid distractions, which as students is a massive help. Keep in mind, though, that it is best to stick to music without lyrics, lest you end up singing along and getting nothing done!
Attend a Festival
What better way to get your music fix than to experience it live? Music festivals and concerts are a loud and lively affair, which many greatly enjoy. Full of dancing and singing along with friends or other loved ones, what’s not to like about them? However, it can be hard to find ones that interest you amidst all the wonderful options. Listed below are just a few that I’ve discovered, and greatly recommend looking into.
Rock the Harbour 2024
Calling all rock n’ roll fans! This three day jam-fest at Alderney Landing in Dartmouth is sure to be a hit that everyone and their dad will love. Multiple local bands will play each night, and there will be food vendors and a bar there to enjoy. It is an outdoor, 19+ event that sounds like a rockin’ good time! This festival will run from August 16th-18th, and you can find out more here.
Shindig 2024
This event is going to be THE party of the year. While technically occurring in the fall, this festival on the Garrison Grounds is full of big names, and even bigger talent. The Chainsmokers, Polo G, and more are sure to bring fans from all over to join this massive party. The two day event will be happening on September 13th-14th; buy your tickets and learn more here!
Candlelight Concerts
For the more classical music fans, the candlelight concerts will offer a night of calming and sophisticated fun. Performing music from ABBA to Mozart and back, this string quartet will wow you, all while being surrounded by gorgeously glowing candles. There is a different theme (Aretha Franklin, the Beatles, or even a movie soundtrack) every night, making it easy to pick a genre that you will enjoy, to sit back and relax. Performed at various venues around the city, and on various nights throughout the summer, they are a unique and breathtaking experience.
Music is a way to express yourself and let loose, in a safe and fun environment. It enhances our lives in so many ways, helping us process complex emotions, or simply get us dancing! Our city gives ample opportunities for this, and people flock to these events every weekend. The summer is an exciting time for Maritime music, offering tons of unique events for all types of tunes. Hopefully, you can check out some of these amazing artists coming soon- I know I will!
